14th July 2021:

Couldn’t fault anything even if we had wanted to. Standards were on a par or even higher than allegedly grander accommodation. Stayed in Bryson Suite which if you are booked in for a few days gives a very comfortable respite from the hustle and bustle of touring. Food was superb. One of our party is a bit of a fussy eater to say the least. Chef (Glen) seemed unfazed by his requests for little tweaks to some dishes. Robert on front of house was a delight. We left thinking we had been lifelong friends.

Tips:

Ask Robert for ANY information you want. His suggestions to us of things to do and places to go were invaluable. Trip to Mallaig on normal train half the price of Hogwarts Express. Same scenery. Sail on Loch Ness from Fort Augustus very enjoyable. Several options available we chose shortest. I think a longer cruise would have been better.

Hugely impressed with Smiddy House. We were made to feel very welcome by Robert, one of the owners, and the service was first class - equally, the quality of food was excellent. The accommodation was spotless and furnished to a very high standard. There is a garden area where we were able to sit and have a drink. We'd recommend Smiddy House to anyone.

Tips:

There is a lovely walk from Smiddy House to the river, and back via the War Monument. Approximately 3.5 miles but the scenery was tremendous, making the walk seem shorter.

Absolutely outstanding staff, service, amenities, restaurant and facilities. We loved our stay and will return & happily recommend. A little noise from the nearby road which got less intrusive as the evening progressed. That said, the establishment is well located for various attractions.

Robert and Glen are the perfect hosts. The attention to detail is superb and any request is immediately dealt with. Glen's food is to die for. Any body looking for perfection in a restaurant with rooms will find it at Smiddy House and Russells restaurant. If we could give you ten stars we would. With every good wish for the future, Ian and Ruth

Tips:

Do take the gondola trip at the Nevis range- amazing views. The woodland walk just up the road is stunning. Drive out to Arisaig and take the little road along the Rhu peninsula. Go to the end of the road and have a picnic on the rocks- brilliant on a fine day.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, had booked on recommendation from friends and family and we were not disappointed from the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and looked after. The level of cleaniness was excellent, had complete confidence in staying/eating at this estabishment, very comfortable indeed. The food was delicious and well presented and the service was great from Robert and Claire and thanks to Glen in the kitchen. Would have no hesitation in booking again, in fact, cannot wait to do so.

Highly recommend, superb. Robert and Glen are the most wonderful hosts. Robert is front of house and has the most sparkling personality. He is super friendly, funny and very attentive. He is knowledgeable about the local area and really goes the extra mile to ensure his guest are well looked after and enjoy their stay. Glen is the chef and the food is to die for, the menu is extensive, the produce is locally sourced and beautifully presented. The breakfast is delicious and substantial. We enjoyed cocktails & locally sourced gin in the garden room before dinner They met us and dropped us off at the station, they took extra special care to make sure my 85 year old mum was well looked after. Robert helped us to organise a walk that included my mum by arranging to drive her to a location where she could meet up with us to enjoy the final leg of the walk. Everything is spotless and immaculate. The decor is stylish and tasteful with quirky little touches. The toiletries were luxurious and plentiful. We had a couple of rooms in the hotel and the separate suite that turned out to be an adorable cottage behind the hotel, which was spacious, well equipped and just perfect with its own outdoor space. The garden to the hotel is floral and colourful and inviting. Everything is perfect.

Tips:

Our hosts recommended a walk close by the hotel which was stunning. We hired a local driver to take us in a tour for the day up to Mallaig, the amazing silver sand beaches of Morar, the Caledonian Canal, the Genfinnan Viaduct to see the famous Harry Potter steam train. Our driver was extremely knowledgeable about the local area & very accommodating.

The Smiddy House is in a lovely location in Spean Bridge. After a long drive from Newcastle we were made to feel very welcome from the minute we checked in. Our room was immaculate and beautifully decorated with real attention to detail. My husband said he'd be happy to have an operation in it it was so clean! The food was absolutely delicious, fresh scallops to start, Venison for my husband and Hake for me as mains. A good selection of wine and beer too. Breakfast was excellent, plentiful with a good choice. Definitely the best food we had on our trip and we ate some exceptional food whilst away, we will definitely return. The food both dinner and breakfast truly 5 star.

Tips:

Why eat anywhere else but at Russell’s. There is plenty to do take a local bus up the Glen to Inverness if you don’t fancy driving, or the train to Mallaig. On a good day try the gondola ride up Aonach Mor. Neptune staircase is worth a visit, as is the moving Commando memorial.

1st October 2019:

We always love staying at Smiddy House and dining at Russell's Restaurant. The accommodation is beautiful and very comfortable and the food is the best ever.

Tips:

There are lots of places to walk in the area or you can take a train trip to see some wonderful scenery in comfort.

This was my second visit the first being 2006. It was even better this time and it was very good before!

Tips:

Make sure you book yourself into the restaurant. You won’t need to go anywhere else. And the porridge is the best I have ever eaten!

11th August 2019:

Smiddy House did not disappoint and met all our expectations . In fact we specifically organised to return here as we had had such a fabulous experience here last year. The hosts are absolutely wonderful and ensure that everything is of the highest standard. We dined both nights in the restaurant and again the attention to detail and standard of the meals cannot be over stated.

31st July 2019:

Robert and Glen compliment each to an exceptional level. Robert is a fabulous front of house host and Glen is an outstanding chef. Nothing was too much trouble. We booked 2 nights at The Smiddy and our friends could only book 1 night as they had booked another guest house for the following night. Robert told them to leave their luggage in the room and he would personally take it over to the other guest house for them. Our friends were really very appreciative of his kind offer as this was way above normal service.

Tips:

Russell’s Restaurant which is in The Smiddy serves excellent food and is the best place to eat in Spean Bridge.

13th July 2019:

A warm welcome and delicious food, we had a drink in the conservatory before dinner and at breakfast was very good also. The room we were allocated was called a”cosy double” and although it was small it was very comfortable.

Tips:

The 2 hour walk along the river and old railway line to the Commandos Memorial was beautiful and the time taken includes half an hour at the memorial.

Excellent reception and hospitality by everyone. They advised about things to do around and suggested a better way back home on the day of check out. Felt well looked after!

Tips:

walk on the edges of Spean river ( suggested by the Smiddy house owners) was fantastic. it was about an hour and half in a beautiful location away from the usual routine life and easily doable for everyone.

26th June 2019:

Robert and Glen were the perfect hosts, extremely welcoming and friendly. Our room was cosy, very comfortable bed, nicely decorated and immaculately clean. The bathroom had a great walk in shower with all the amenities you could want. We had dinner in the restaurant, the food was amazing, Michelin star quality. Breakfast was sumptuous too. Cannot recommend it enough, this is a real gem. We will definitely stay there again when we are in the area.
